Robert L. Thompson was born to Walter C. and Callie R. Thompson on January 11, 1954 in Muncie, Indiana. He was the youngest of five children (Orville, Olivia, Walter and William Edward).

 

He started his career at General Motors in 1977. In June 1993, he was elected the trustee chair of the Local 499 of the United Auto Workers (UAW). In 1996, Robert was awarded the UAW Walter P. Reuther Distinguished Service Award. He retired from General Motors in 2009.

 

Robert was also involved in other community organizations including: Debonair’s Club, Center Township Board of Delaware County (Elect), Chanticleer Club, Inc., UAW Retiree Chapter, UAW Delaware County CAP Council, Future Choices, Inc., Rooster Booster Men Club, Southside High School Class of 1972 Reunion Committee, NAACP Muncie Chapter, UAW Local 499 Bail Supervisor, Muncie Boys and Girls Club, Calvary Missionary Baptist Church where he was a member of the board of trustees, an usher and member of the choir, Muncie Human Rights Commission, Muncie Black Expo, and the 2011 Muncie Homecoming Festival Planning Committee.

 

Robert was a long time 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Widow's Son Lodge #22 F.&A.M. and Malta Consistory #34, Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite, NJ, PHA.

 

He has three children and one son-in-law: Robert Juanell, Robertha Nikki (Terry) and Rashona and six grandchildren:  Davieon, Ashia, Melia, Jade, Madison, Jaden.
